Between partners, passion brings momentary joy, but responsibility and commitment ensure lifelong happiness. Love becomes painful when we focus on those who have treated us well occasionally, while ignoring those who have cared for us consistently; we often overlook those who truly love us, only to chase those who neglect us.
A disciple once asked a Zen master, 'Master, how can I control my emotions and remain calm in the face of adversity?' The Zen master replied, 'If you believe deeply in the laws of karma, you will not be misled. All grievances and resentment stem from cause and effect; understanding this will eliminate anger. Getting angry is like drinking poison and expecting others to suffer.' Make room in your heart and do not let resentment fill it. Anger is punishing yourself for someone else's mistake, while tolerance is using another's achievements to inspire yourself.
In middle age, the perspective on wealth often shifts: one finds little interest in small gains yet struggles to achieve great wealth. Instead of obsessing over the outcomes of gain and loss, one learns to find meaning in the process of life.
Do not allow a minor mistake to convince you of your incompetence. Remember that 'No one is perfect.' Once a mistake is identified, correct it, and ensure it is not repeated; that way, the journey continues.
As time passes, numbness becomes more terrifying than loneliness.
On the journey of life, smooth sailing is rare, while twists and turns are common. Success is built upon countless failures. We must learn to navigate through the turbulent river of setbacks.
