We should weigh the relative value of interests appropriately to reduce sensitivity to the opinions of others, whether those opinions are flattering or painful, as they are often driven by emotion. Without this, one becomes a slave to the whims of others—for someone craving praise, both harm and comfort are easily manipulated.
Life is a complex tapestry of forgiveness and tolerance, playing out all the grudges and emotions of the world. Witnessing the vast changes of time, one realizes that nothing is permanent. Facing it all, learn to let go of the past without lingering, remaining calm and composed, like clouds gathering and dispersing. Every day and every moment is both an end and a beginning.
Peace is a blessing, contentment is fortune, a clear mind is wealth, and few desires are longevity. In affairs, do not seek achievement; having no faults is achievement enough. In conduct, do not seek gratitude; having no grievances is virtue enough. A person's breadth of mind expands with fewer desires and narrows with more. It is better to live in pure poverty and find joy than in corrupt wealth and endure anxiety. May one avoid causing distress and avoid being the target of resentment. When deep in thought, know when to withdraw; when at the height of success, know when to rest. Do not exhaust your momentum, do not exhaust your luck, do not take all advantages, and do not over-utilize your wits.
