Ping and Fan were college roommates, with one bunk above the other. After graduation, they went to the same city and joined the same newspaper, becoming colleagues and friends, despite their strikingly different personalities.
Ping is quiet, cautious, and meticulous. He has always been the good child at home, an excellent student at school, and a reliable employee at work. Wherever he goes, he keeps things neat and orderly. His bed is folded like a block of tofu, he changes clothes and socks daily, and checks his keys, wallet, and monthly ticket three times before leaving. He compares prices at three stores before buying anything and keeps a fixed pace and schedule for commuting. His writing is painstakingly precise, without a single typo, yet his articles are bland and leave little impression.
Fan, in contrast, is bold, free-spirited, and careless with details. Throughout his upbringing, he caused worry for parents, teachers, and supervisors. Wherever he goes, disorder follows. He never folds his bed in the morning, often wears mismatched socks, forgets keys when leaving, forgets to collect change when shopping, and sometimes misses his bus stop. Yet when he writes, his words flow freely and vividly. Though mistakes are frequent, his talent and flair shine through, especially in his endings, leaving readers deeply impressed and lingering in thought.
