A freighter was sailing through the turbulent waves of the Atlantic Ocean. A young Black boy working as a cabin boy at the stern accidentally fell into the sea. He cried out for help, but no one heard him. The ship sailed further and further away, until eventually, there was nothing left but the boundless ocean. In his moment of utter despair, the boy remembered the kind face of the old captain. "No, the captain knows I've fallen into the sea, and he will come to save me," he thought. Summoning all his courage, he used the last of his strength to swim forward...
At that moment, the captain realized the boy was missing. Once he concluded that the child had fallen overboard, he immediately ordered the ship to turn back. Someone advised him, "It's been so long; even if he hasn't drowned, the sharks might have gotten him..." The captain hesitated for a moment, but ultimately decided to go back and search.
Finally, at the very moment the boy was about to sink, the captain arrived.
After being rescued, the boy knelt on the ground, thanking the captain for saving his life. The captain helped him up and asked, "How were you able to hold on for so long?"
The boy replied, "I knew you would come to save me! I knew it, because I know the kind of man you are!"
Hearing this, the white-haired captain fell to his knees before the boy, tears streaming down his face: "Child, it wasn't me who saved you, it was you who saved me! I am so ashamed of my hesitation in that moment..."
To be trusted by others is a blessing. But to have someone remember you in their darkest hour, believing you will lend a helping hand—that is a profound blessing indeed.
