Waging war to contest land results in killing until the fields are full; waging war to contest cities results in killing until the cities are full. This is what is called leading the land to devour human flesh; such a crime is not worthy of even death.
If a ruler views his ministers as hands and feet, the ministers will view the ruler as their belly and heart; if the ruler views his ministers as dogs and horses, the ministers will view the ruler as a fellow countryman; if the ruler views his ministers as dirt and chaff, the ministers will view the ruler as a bandit or enemy.
Fish is what I desire, and bear's paw is also what I desire; if I cannot have both, I will give up the fish and take the bear's paw. Life is what I desire, and righteousness is also what I desire; if I cannot have both, I will give up life and take righteousness.
Respect the elderly in my family, and extend that respect to the elderly of others; care for the young in my family, and extend that care to the young of others.
Mencius said: Does water have a preference for east or west, or for up or down? Human nature is good, just as water flows downward. There is no person who is not good, just as there is no water that does not flow down. Now, if you strike water and make it leap, it can rise above your forehead; if you force it to flow, it can be made to flow up a mountain. Is this the nature of water? No, it is due to external force. Similarly, the fact that people can be made to do evil is due to external influence, not their inherent nature.
Heavenly timing is not as good as favorable terrain, and favorable terrain is not as good as human harmony.
Killing the innocent is not benevolent, and taking what is not rightfully yours is not righteous.
One who harms benevolence is called a 'bandit'; one who harms righteousness is called 'cruel'. A person who is both a bandit and cruel is called a 'single man'. We have heard of the execution of the single man Zhou, but we have not heard of the regicide of a ruler.
