When food is scarce, gorillas will also seek out termites to supplement their energy.
One day, at a place where termites were present, a gorilla and an anteater met. The anteater complained resentfully, "I have sharp, hook-like claws for digging into termite mounds and a tongue over forty centimeters long. What right do you have to snatch my meal away?"
The gorilla ignored the anteater. He calmly broke a long, thin twig from a nearby tree, stripped off the leaves, and licked the branch to coat it with thick saliva. Then, he carefully inserted the twig into the termite mound. Before long, he pulled out a string of wriggling termites and began to eat them with great relish.
"Do you see now?" the gorilla said to the anteater. "I rely on wisdom. My way of eating is quite elegant! Unlike you, who destroys the very home of the termites while eating them—how foolish!"
