Life is fleeting; soon we will all turn to dust, or become a mere name, or even nothing at all. Since life is so short, the things we value most are often hollow, perishable, and trivial. Everything beyond our physical bodies and breath is neither ours nor within our control.
Your life is a reflection of your state of mind. If your heart is filled with anger, you live in hell; if it is kind and beautiful, you live in heaven; if it is free from greed and attachment, you live as an Arhat; if it is compassionate and empty, you live as a Bodhisattva; and if it is perfectly fulfilled, you live as a Buddha.
A shell takes a lifetime to transform countless grains of sand into a single pearl, just as a rainbow requires vast amounts of water vapor to bloom its momentary beauty. If we view these processes as setbacks, then it is these very setbacks that create the dazzling pearl and the beautiful rainbow.
If you quarrel like a married couple, converse like friends, flirt like first loves, and protect one another like siblings, then you are destined to be together. Instead of waiting for others to love you, learn to love yourself more.
Wisdom may lead to destruction when one is alone, but it can lead to salvation when two people are together.
