After graduating at the top of his class in Computer Science from Columbia University, Kai-Fu Lee successfully enrolled in Carnegie Mellon University to pursue a PhD in Computer Science. Before he began his doctoral studies, his department head, Haberman, told him that the purpose of a PhD is to produce a world-class dissertation, at least one that is top-tier in its field. This statement deeply moved Kai-Fu Lee. However, it was Haberman's next words that benefited him even more profoundly: "Producing a world-class dissertation is not the ultimate goal of pursuing a PhD; rather, it is about acquiring a method of thinking during the process—a method that will lead you to top-tier success in any field!" Kai-Fu Lee's career has validated this claim. His doctoral dissertation on speech recognition using statistical methods remains a theoretical foundation for speech recognition products today. Through his doctoral journey, Kai-Fu Lee also learned how to solve problems and gained the courage to overcome challenges.
