Two traveling angels stopped to stay at a wealthy family’s home, but the family was unfriendly and placed them in a cold basement corner.
As they prepared their bedding, the older angel noticed a hole in the wall and casually repaired it. The younger angel asked why, and the older angel replied, “Things are not always what they seem.”
The next night, the angels stayed at a very poor farmer’s house. Despite their hardship, the couple warmly welcomed them, shared their little food, and even gave up their own bed.
Early the next morning, the angels saw the farmer and his wife crying because their only source of livelihood—a cow—had died. The younger angel became angry and asked why this had happened.
The older angel explained, “When we stayed in the wealthy family’s basement, I saw through the wall that it was filled with gold. Since the owner was blinded by greed and unwilling to share his wealth, I sealed the hole.”
“Last night, the angel of death came for the farmer’s wife, so I let the cow take her place. That is why things are not always what they seem.”
This story reminds us that appearances often differ from reality. With faith and understanding of cause and effect, one can believe that every action carries its own deeper return.
