During a speech at Peking University, Yu Minhong, the president of New Oriental, shared two thought-provoking stories.
The "Story of Six Apples": A student from a wealthy family used to bring six apples to school every week. His roommates assumed he would share one with each of them, but he actually ate one apple every day himself. The classmates were not only envious of the apples but also looked down upon his selfishness. Years later, his roommates had all achieved great success in their entrepreneurial ventures, while the student who ate the apples alone had accomplished nothing. When he attempted to join his former classmates' successful companies, he was rejected—simply because of his previous selfish behavior.
The "Story of a Kettle of Hot Water": During his time at Peking University, Yu Minhong proactively cleaned the dormitory and filled his classmates' thermoses with hot water every single day for four years. Ten years later, when his company, New Oriental, needed talent, he reached out to former classmates who had achieved success in the US and Canada. They agreed to return without hesitation, for a reason that surprised Yu. They said, "Yu Minhong, we are coming back because of how you took care of us for four years. We know your character—if you can take care of yourself, you certainly won't let those around you suffer. Let's go back to China and build New Oriental together!"
