By a stroke of serendipity, I visited Master Minghai, the abbot of Bailin Temple in Zhao County, Hebei. The Master taught that everyone should devote some time each day to "being with oneself."
Someone once asked for guidance, mentioning an inability to focus, even switching TV channels incessantly while watching. Master Minghai advised him to practice the "Turning Off the TV Method." The Master added, "In fact, I am also practicing. Sometimes when I am alone, I feel the need to hold a book to calm my mind; my goal is to practice until I can set the book down and no longer need it."
His words were enlightening. Perhaps a "Dharma gate" can be understood this way: it is the cultivation of a self-sufficient mind that remains independent of the torrential flood of information. Most of the time, we are immersed in external information, easily swept away by the waves, which obscures our essence and causes us to lose ourselves. Thus, "being with oneself" becomes a form of spiritual practice.
