"What a deal!" the greedy man thought. Believing this was a stroke of luck, he picked out a pair of shoes worth 500 yuan and headed home in silence. When his wife asked how much they cost, he remained silent. No matter how many times she asked, he did not utter a word.
His family grew worried and called for a doctor. When the doctor questioned him, the man bit his lip and kept silent. The doctor was baffled, thinking it was an incurable mysterious illness, leaving his wife terrified.
When the three days were up, the shoemaker came to the house. After chatting with the wife for a while, he entered the room alone and said to the greedy man, "The time is up; you may speak now." With that, the shoemaker took his leave.
The greedy man excitedly shared the story with his wife, boasting, "This is wonderful! I got a pair of 500-yuan shoes just by staying silent for three days!"
