In ancient China, the imperial examination system was a unique institution. For ancient people, this meant achieving fame and success, often bringing positions, reputation, wealth, status, and even changes in family and social standing.
Compared with modern society, the role of reading in ancient times was more direct, obvious, and easier to see. In modern times, the value of education has become more diverse. Nine-year compulsory education aims to eliminate illiteracy and improve overall public quality. Higher education, including college and university studies, provides a foundation for future employment and personal development, creating more possibilities for individuals. Meanwhile, pursuing master's degrees, doctorates, and postdoctoral studies is no longer simply equivalent to obtaining high official positions after passing ancient examinations; instead, it focuses more on scientific research, exploration of knowledge, and advancement in various fields.
As a result, the role of reading has become more common, accessible, and multi-level. In the past, farming was rarely considered related to education, but this perception has gradually changed. Modern agriculture relies on scientific methods, and many farmers today possess knowledge and skills that are comparable to those of experts and professors. For children in rural areas, attending school and receiving education has also become a natural and voluntary choice.
In earlier times, some families did not place much importance on education. They believed that after a child learned to write their name and perform simple calculations, it was enough to return to farm work. At that time, many people thought the purpose of reading was simply to sign documents such as land records and house contracts, or to handle basic calculations with local merchants.
