The outcome for the two young men is truly regrettable. If the one who chose the fishing rod and the one who chose the fish had joined forces—using the available fish to overcome immediate hardships and later using the fishing rod to build a future by the sea—they could have not only survived but also lived a prosperous life. Unfortunately, one chose reality while the other chose idealism, meaning their ideals and reality failed to harmonize.
In life, many people harbor ideals, yet very few achieve true success. What is the reason? Looking strictly at the nature of their ideals: some are overly ambitious and unrealistic; some are short-sighted, focusing only on immediate gains; some are indecisive and give up halfway; Some possess great ambitions but never take action; some are insatiable and trap themselves in their own desires; and some, despite having talent and virtue, head in the wrong direction. However, if we can integrate ideals with reality—rooting our lofty aspirations in the soil of practical circumstances and acting according to our environment and personal capabilities—we can move toward success with much greater certainty.
