Tom Doran is a renowned American swimmer. As a child, he once experienced severe difficulty breathing while swimming. His parents took him to a doctor, who said, "Your airways are narrow and you have severe asthma; the oxygen entering your lungs is only one-tenth of that of an average person. The more intense your training, the more dangerous your condition becomes. You must carry an oxygen tank at all times." Facing this, Doran wondered, "Will my career end because of asthma?" The next day, he returned to the pool, accompanied by an oxygen tank. At the 1996 Atlanta Olympics, due to regulations, he could not bring the oxygen tank into his room in the Olympic Village and had to use it in a hot and stuffy trailer. An hour before the race, he had to apply ice to his body every five minutes to alleviate the discomfort caused by hypoxia, but this did not dampen his determination to win gold. Finally, he competed in the 400m individual medley final. Despite the breathing difficulties, he fought hard and ultimately won the gold medal. After the race, a reporter asked Doran, "How many medals would you have won if you didn't have asthma?" Doran replied, "Maybe not even one. Perhaps I wouldn't have known how to overcome my own limitations." Despite his physical challenges, Doran never gave up on his dream; he carried his oxygen tank and bravely dove into the water. This struggle against adversity allowed him to turn the impossible into reality with just one-tenth of the oxygen. In smooth times, people may not realize their full potential; it is only when difficulties arise that infinite potential can be released.
