“Have you not heard my song?” which shattered the melody of the Rainbow Skirt and Feathered Dress; have you not heard my poem describing the love for the music before the tune was fully played? Since ancient times, every remarkable skill has had its master: Lady Yang created the melody, and you composed the score. You say this dance is difficult to find a performer for, requiring a woman of unmatched beauty. The enchanting women of Wu have faded like smoke, and the beauty of Yue, Xi Shi, has turned into dust. The charming flowers and lovely smiles have long been silent; the grand halls of the past now stand empty. If what you say is truly so, please calmly listen to my words. If only a woman of exceptional beauty is allowed to pass this dance on, I fear this art may disappear from the world. The differences between beauty and plainness, excellence and inferiority, are not truly so great; most of the time, they depend on how people value them. Do not dislike the graceful forms of Li Juan and Zhang Tai; perhaps they too can be taught according to circumstances.
Tonight I hear your words played on the pipa, and it is like hearing celestial music that suddenly brightens my ears. — Bai Juyi, "Song of the Pipa"
A small banquet ends after seeking relief from the summer heat; I walk across the bridge beneath the moon and return. Music and songs follow me back to the courtyard, while lanterns shine beneath the towers. The remaining summer heat is driven away by the cicadas, and the wild geese announce the arrival of early autumn. What can restore my desire for sleep? Before lying down, I raise the remaining cup of wine. — Bai Juyi, "After the Banquet"
Inside the Jing'an residence, willows stand beside the window; before the Wangyi Terrace, flowers spread across the ground. The spring scenery in both places ends on the same day, while those at home think of travelers and travelers think of home. — Bai Juyi, "Looking at the Post Station Terrace"
The departed leave no trace or influence, and the empty courtyard turns from morning to dusk again. After the family's mourning is complete, the door of the memorial hall is locked at night. Without wife or child, who will arrange the burial? Only the funeral banner can be seen fluttering toward the moon. — Bai Juyi, "Night Cry for Li Yidao"
Coming and going at the river mouth, I guard an empty boat alone; the moon shines around the boat, and the river water is cold. — Bai Juyi, "Song of the Pipa"
A lifelong old friend is now thousands of miles away from me; suddenly, worldly thoughts arise for a brief moment at this time. — Bai Juyi, "Letter to Yuan Zhen"
Though heaven and earth may eventually come to an end, this everlasting love will never cease. — Bai Juyi, "Song of Everlasting Regret"
