Gary Dahl was once an advertising executive. In April 1975, while at a bar with friends, he overheard someone complaining about their pet. He jokingly remarked to his friend, "The perfect pet would be a stone; it needs no feeding, no bathing, and it won't get sick or die."
What began as a joke soon inspired Dahl to turn the idea into reality, leading to the creation of the "Pet Rock." Designed to mimic a real pet, each "Pet Rock" came in a cardboard box with air holes and straw for comfort, complete with a pet training guide.
Each "Pet Rock" was sold for $3.95, yielding a net profit of $3 per unit. In just the first six months on the market, the "Pet Rock" generated $15 million in revenue for Dahl.
