A man aspired to become a billionaire by the age of 40. By the time he was 35, he realized that a regular job would never fulfill this dream. He decided to quit his job and start a business, hoping to strike it rich quickly. However, over the next five years, his ventures—a travel agency and a coffee shop—all ended in failure. Seeing him exhausted and complaining about his luck, his wife suggested he seek guidance from a renowned local wise man.
The wise man led him to a courtyard filled with ancient, lush trees. "If you can sweep all the fallen leaves in this courtyard clean," the wise man said, "I will tell you the secret to acquiring billionaire wealth."
Though skeptical, the man was driven by greed and the wise man's solemnity. He thought sweeping the courtyard would be easy and picked up a broom. An hour later, after sweeping from one end to the other, he thought he was finished, only to see fresh leaves falling on the clean ground. Frustrated, he sped up his pace to outrun the falling leaves. After a full day of struggle, the ground was just as covered as when he started. He threw down the broom in anger, asking why the wise man was playing a joke on him.
Pointing to the leaves, the wise man said, "Desire is like these endless falling leaves; it covers your patience layer by layer. Patience is the sound of wealth. You have the desire for a billion dollars, yet you only have the patience of a single day. Just as autumn leaves can only be fully cleared once they have all fallen in winter, you expect to finish everything in just one day."
Reflecting on this, the man followed the wise man for a walk. Passing through a bamboo forest, the wise man asked, "Looking at these towering bamboos, do you also wish to achieve such height?" "Of course," the man replied. "But do you know?" the wise man continued. "Before a bamboo shoot breaks the soil, it is merely a tiny bud. To support its eventual growth, its roots spread vast distances underground, silently building a foundation of nutrients. When the shoots emerge, if you listen quietly in the middle of the night, you can hear the sound of them growing. In just a few months, they reach heights of over ten meters."
The wise man concluded, "We often see people achieve success effortlessly, but we fail to see the time they spent silently growing their roots. If your patience is not even as great as a bamboo plant, how can you hope to hear the sound of wealth?"
