When entering the workforce, most people strive to perform their jobs well. However, one aspect of work that is unavoidable is social interaction. People are diverse, and when someone shows hostility toward you, a constant tendency to avoid conflict often yields counterproductive results. I once had a friend who, despite being a leader, acted with excessive caution—always afraid to speak up or act. Consequently, his "gentlemanly" demeanor did not deter those who mistreated him; instead, it only emboldened them. A college student friend told me today that she was facing unfriendly treatment during her summer internship. I advised her: Do not provoke others, but maintain a low profile; and if conflict is unavoidable, face it bravely, otherwise, life will become quite difficult.
