We have so many needs and desires, which consequently bring about endless struggles and sorrows. The root of suffering is actually planted deep within our hearts. It is as if our bodies suddenly acquired magnetism for unknown reasons, causing iron filings or steel needles to stick to us and cause pain. Similarly, the cause of pain is often not external, but rather the strong attraction of our nature towards things that can cause us suffering.
In infancy, we do not know how to disguise ourselves. When we are near death, we are forced to strip off all masks, as we no longer have the strength to maintain them. Looking back at our lives, the time we lived authentically is truly too short.
In every person's life, there are always opportunities that can change one's destiny. In youth, there is on average one such opportunity every year. So why can only a very few people seize these opportunities? The answer lies in habit. All opportunities require you to change yourself, but too many people are accustomed to their old lifestyles, refusing to change, and thus refusing the opportunities as well. The reason your life remains unchanged is not a lack of opportunities, but simply that you have grown accustomed to the status quo.
