Has there ever been someone in your life like this? Someone who is close to you, spending every day together with you, with your eyes often meeting; yet also far away from you, not a playmate for after-school fun, nor a close friend in your heart. However, you constantly pay attention to him: Did he solve the last problem on his math test? What score did his Chinese teacher give him for his essay? Who is he getting closer to lately? And so on. You watch him closely, quietly competing with him in your mind, determined to surpass him in the next exam and score higher in writing, yet unwilling to admit that you are jealous of him.
W, like me, is a slender male student, but he is half a head taller than I am. I have a deep impression of the first time I saw him, particularly his high nose bridge, neatly combed bangs, and a touch of scholarly air. Actually, I had heard of him before. He was the top student in Class 2 of Grade 7, frequently appearing in the top ranks on the school's honor roll during midterm and final exams. When we were reclassified in Grade 8, we ended up in the same class. The last digit of my student ID became 2, while his naturally remained 1. W was appointed as the study committee member by the homeroom teacher, and later designated as the Chinese language representative by the Chinese teacher, while I was only the math representative. Perhaps from that moment on, many of my unconscious actions turned into deliberate ones, and I began to quietly compete with him in my heart.
