Reading is primarily for gaining knowledge. It serves to accumulate information and enhance learning, insight, and wisdom. As the British philosopher Francis Bacon stated, "Knowledge is power," and as Confucius said, "Study without thinking is labor lost; think without study is perilous." Both convey this very principle.

Reading allows one to understand the past and present, and to gain insight into internal and external matters; it enables one to travel through the tunnel of time, reaching the past, the present, and the future.
