One quiet late night, the Lock awakened the Key and complained, “Every day, I work hard to guard the door for our master, yet he favors you and always keeps you by his side. I truly envy you!” The Key responded with dissatisfaction, “You stay home every day, comfortable and at ease, how peaceful! Meanwhile, I follow the master everywhere, suffering under the sun and rain. I envy you much more!”
Once, the Key wanted to experience an easy life, so it hid itself. After returning home, the master couldn't find the Key. In his anger, he smashed the Lock and threw it into the trash can. Later, upon entering the room, he found the Key and said angrily, “The Lock is smashed, what use is there in keeping you?” With that, he threw the Key into the trash can as well.
Meeting in the trash heap, the Lock and the Key couldn't help but sigh, “Our tragic fate today stems from the fact that in the past, we failed to recognize each other's value and contributions. Instead, we looked at the hills on the other side, haggled over trivialities, and were consumed by mutual envy and suspicion!”
