A young man asked a Zen master for guidance: 'Master, some say I am a genius, while others call me a fool. In your view, who am I?'
Instead of answering directly, the master asked, 'How do you view yourself?' The young man looked at him, completely confused.
The master continued, 'Take one jin of rice, for example. In the eyes of a housewife, it is several bowls of rice; to a baker, it is a cake; to a liquor merchant, it becomes wine. The rice remains the same. Similarly, you remain you. How much potential you have depends entirely on how you see yourself.'
Hearing this, the young man suddenly had a moment of enlightenment.
一位青年向禅师请教：“大师，有人说我是天才，也有人骂我是笨蛋。依您看，我究竟是个什么样的人？”
禅师没有直接回答，而是反问：“你是如何看待自己的？”青年听后一脸茫然。
禅师接着说道：“譬如一斤米，在炊妇眼中是几碗饭；在饼家眼里是烧饼；在酒商眼中又成了酒。米还是那米，本质并未改变。同样，你还是你，有多大的出息，取决于你怎么看待自己。”
听完这番话，青年豁然开朗。
