Mencius said: “When Heaven is about to confer a great office on any man, it first exercises his mind with pain, afflicts his muscles and bones with hardship, starves his body, subjects him to poverty, and frustrates the work of his hands. In this way, it stirs up his mind, hardens his nature, and develops his deficiencies.”
