Sometimes, you must realize that you are merely an ordinary grain of sand rather than a priceless pearl. To stand out from the crowd, you must possess the capability to rise above others. If you cannot endure setbacks and frustrations, or withstand neglect and mediocrity, it will be difficult to achieve brilliance. To become extraordinary, you must strive to transform yourself into a pearl.
There was once a young man who considered himself a polymath. However, after graduation, he faced repeated rejections and could not find his ideal job. Feeling that his talents were unappreciated, he grew deeply disillusioned with society. In his despair, he went to the seaside, intending to end his life. Just as he was about to commit suicide, an elderly man passed by, noticed him, and saved him. The old man asked why he was taking such a desperate path, and the young man lamented that he received no recognition from society, and that no one appreciated or employed him...
The old man picked up a grain of sand from the beach, showed it to the young man, and then casually tossed it onto the ground. He said, "Please pick up that grain of sand I just threw down." "That is impossible!" the young man replied.
Without a word, the old man reached into his pocket, pulled out a translucent, sparkling pearl, and tossed it onto the ground as well. He then asked the young man:
"Can you pick up this pearl?" "Of course I can!" "Then you should understand the reason why. You must realize that you are not a pearl yet, so you cannot demand immediate recognition from others. If you want to be recognized, you must find a way to make yourself into a pearl." The young man frowned and nodded, falling into silence.
