Only sages can understand the feelings of all under heaven. In the I Ching, when Qian is below and Kun is above, it is Tai (Peace); when Qian is above and Kun is below, it is Pi (Obstruction). In terms of symbolism, benefiting the lower by diminishing the upper leads to growth, while benefiting the upper by diminishing the lower leads to decline. Qian represents Heaven and Kun represents Earth. If Heaven were below and Earth were above, the positions would be contrary; it is called Tai because Heaven and Earth interact. If the ruler is above and the guest is below, the order is naturally followed; it is called Pi because Heaven and Earth do not interact. Thus, if Heaven and Earth do not interact, all things cannot be nurtured; if human feelings do not interact, all matters will be in disharmony.
Laziness comes from a lack of labor, while greed comes from overworking. People fall into four categories: the lazy, the greedy, the balanced, and the both. Human nature tends toward either laziness or greed; laziness leads to a lack of cultivation, while greed leads to a loss of nourishment. Cultivation preserves character, and nourishment preserves life; thus, the wise avoid both laziness and greed.
When communicating with others, use the art of suggestion. This allows you to respect others' dignity on the surface while resolving matters perfectly in private—the ideal approach. Mastering suggestion leads to better interpersonal relationships.
