A monk could not endure the solitude of monastic life, so he left the temple and returned to secular life.
However, less than a month later, he found himself unable to tolerate the gossip and noise of the secular world, so he returned to the monastery.
Soon after, he left again because he could not bear the loneliness. This cycle repeated several times.
An old monk observed this and said to him: you do not need to insist on being either a monk or a layman. Instead, find a balance between the temple and the world, such as opening a tea shop along the mountain road.
Later, the man married and opened a small tea shop by the roadside.
The old monk’s advice proved right: those who are “in-between” often thrive best in roles that match their true state of being.
