The cup felt lonely until hot water was poured in, and that scorching sensation was the feeling of love. When the water warmed, the cup felt comfortable—that is the feeling of life. When the water cooled, the cup felt afraid—perhaps that is the feeling of loss. When the water grew cold, the cup felt distressed and poured it out. The cup regained its freedom, only to fall and shatter into pieces. Looking at the traces of water on every fragment, it realized it still loved the water and longed to love it once more, but it was no longer possible. Happiness is simple: it is the art of letting go. Let go of heavy burdens and bitter resentments; let go of hypocrisy and clever excuses; let go of the pain of loss and the sorrow of humiliation; let go of endless arguments and fruitless entanglements; let go of extravagant expectations and greedy desires; let go of the pursuit of power and the obsession with vanity. Only when the dust settles do we truly understand that letting go is true happiness.
