In the early years of the People's Republic of China, engineers at a research institute were stumped when they disassembled a Soviet-made machine. With nearly a hundred pipes intertwined in a complex web, it was nearly impossible to distinguish the inlets from the outlets. Despite their best efforts, the engineers could not solve the puzzle. At that moment, an old gatekeeper approached with a tobacco pipe and a piece of chalk. He blew smoke into one of the pipes and marked it, repeating the process for the others.
