Mike drove to Yorktown and found Mrs. Green’s home.
He rang the doorbell, and Mr. Green opened the door. Seeing Mike, he was surprised and asked, “Why are you here?”
Mike said that he had come specially to thank them. Mr. Green invited him inside.
Mrs. Green was sitting in a chair in front of the television, listening to the sound coming from it. When she heard Mike’s voice, she tried to stand up to greet him, but Mike quickly stepped forward and stopped her.
Mike said emotionally, “Thank you for allowing me to see the light again! But why did you donate your own corneas to me?”
Mrs. Green smiled and began telling him a story from the past.
Five years earlier, she had been walking down the street when a runaway car suddenly rushed toward her. At that moment, she was so frightened that she froze. Just then, a police officer passing by noticed the danger and immediately rushed forward to pull her away. Because of him, she escaped unharmed.
After the officer let go of her, he left. At that time, she had even forgotten to say a simple “thank you.”
Later, after asking around, she learned that the police officer’s name was Mike.
Mike suddenly remembered that there had indeed been such an incident. It turned out that Mrs. Green was the person he had saved from danger years ago.
Mrs. Green said, “Over the years, I have always wanted to repay you, but I never had the chance. Not long ago, I heard that you needed a cornea transplant, and I thought I could finally do something for you...”
Only then did Mike understand that Mrs. Green had donated her corneas to repay the kindness he had shown when he saved her life. He was so moved that he could no longer speak.
After Mike left, Mr. Green asked, “Why did you lie to Mike? I know the person he saved back then wasn’t you!”
Mrs. Green smiled and replied, “If I had not told him this, he would have felt guilty because he could not repay me. But when he believes that I am simply returning the favor for saving my life, he will feel happy. Being able to do something for our excellent police officer makes me happy as well. Besides, he needs a pair of bright eyes more than I do. I hope you will keep this secret and never tell anyone.
When helping others, we should never make them feel guilty or indebted because of our kindness. That is what true help means.”
After hearing her words, Mr. Green’s eyes filled with tears. He felt that Mrs. Green’s donation was the noblest donation in the world.
