Eskil was a shy and introverted child who suffered from severe acrophobia; he was so afraid of heights that he never even dared to ride his father's motorcycle. Consequently, his parents had to move their home from the sixth floor to the first floor. Once in school, unlike other rambunctious boys, he never engaged in climbing or jumping around.
When he was ten, during a school picnic on a hillside, Eskil happened to glance down from the summit and immediately fainted. Doctors diagnosed him with severe acrophobia and advised his family to keep him away from high places.
His classmates treated this as a joke, teasing him as a "fearful little bug."
Eskil was determined to change. After returning home, he climbed onto a one-meter-high cement platform in the garden. He was incredibly nervous at first, but driven by the embarrassment of being teased, he resolved to overcome his fear. He stood there with his eyes closed, then gradually opened them. After ten minutes, he realized the height wasn't scary. By the next day, he could climb on and off the platform with ease. He excitedly shared his achievement with his father. Although his father thought the platform was quite low, he offered some brief encouragement.
Sensing his father's reaction, Eskil asked, "Dad, could you bring me a wooden chair?"
"What for?" his father asked, puzzled.
"I want to take one more step higher!"
His father brought a wooden chair and placed it on the platform. Eskil sat on it for a while before asking, "Can you hold me while I stand up?" His father agreed, supporting him as he stood upright. As time passed, his anxiety gradually faded. Five minutes later, his father let go; although the fear momentarily returned, he persevered. Ten minutes later, the tension completely vanished. He spread his arms wide and shouted joyfully, "I am no longer a fearful little bug!"
