A person was sheltering from the rain under an eave when he saw Guanyin walking past with an umbrella. The person said, "Guanyin, please save all sentient beings; will you take me with you?" Guanyin replied, "I am in the rain, and you are under the eave. There is no rain under the eave, so you do not need me to save you." The person immediately jumped out from under the eave and stood in the rain, saying, "Now I am also in the rain. Shouldn't you save me now?" Guanyin answered, "You are in the rain, and I am in the rain. I am not getting wet because I have an umbrella; you are getting wet because you do not. Therefore, it is not me who saves me, but the umbrella that saves me.
If you wish to be saved, you need not look for me. Please find your own umbrella!" With that, she left. The next day, the person encountered a difficult situation and went to a temple to pray to Guanyin. Upon entering the temple, he noticed someone bowing before the statue of Guanyin. This person looked exactly like Guanyin, without any difference. The person asked, "Are you Guanyin?" The other replied, "I am indeed Guanyin." The person asked again, "Then why are you bowing to yourself?" Guanyin smiled and said, "I have also encountered difficulties, but I know that Asking others is not as good as relying on oneself."
