A man was sheltering from the rain under an eaves when he saw the Bodhisattva Guanyin walking past with an umbrella. There is no rain under the eaves, so you do not need my salvation." The man immediately jumped out from under the eaves into the rain and said, "Now I am also in the rain. Should you not save me now?" Guanyin said, "You are in the rain, and I am in the rain. I am not getting wet because I have an umbrella; you are getting wet because you do not. Therefore, it is not I who saves myself, but the umbrella. If you wish to be saved, do not seek me out; go find your own umbrella." With these words, he left. The next day, the man encountered a difficult situation and went to the temple to pray to Guanyin. Upon entering the temple, he discovered that someone was worshipping in front of the statue of Guanyin. This person looked exactly like Guanyin, not a bit different. The man asked, "Are you Guanyin?" The person replied, "I am indeed Guanyin." The man asked again, "Then why are you worshipping yourself?" Guanyin smiled and said, "I have also encountered a difficult situation, but I know that relying on others is not as good as relying on oneself."
一位人在屋檐下避雨，见观音撑伞经过，便请求道：“观音菩萨，普度众生，能否带我一程？”观音答道：“我在雨中，你在檐下，檐下无雨，你无需我度。”那人随即跳入雨中，说：“现在我也在雨中，该度我了吧？”观音说：“你在雨中，我亦在雨中，我不湿身是因为有伞，你淋湿是因为无伞。所以不是我度自己，而是伞度我。若欲得度，不必找我，请自去找伞。”言毕离去。 次日，此人遭遇难事，前往寺庙求观音。入庙方发现，观音像前竟也有一人在拜，那人与观音相貌完全相同。他问：“你是观音吗？”那人答：“我正是观音。”他又问：“那你为何拜自己？”观音笑道：“我也遇到了难事，但我知道，求人不如求己。”
