Once upon a time, a small nation sent three identical golden statues as tribute to the Great Kingdom. The statues were magnificent and exquisitely crafted, delighting the Emperor immensely. However, the envoys posed a challenging riddle: among these three identical figures, which one held the greatest value? The Emperor tried many methods, summoning master jewelers to inspect them. Whether by weighing them or examining the craftsmanship, the three were indistinguishable. As the envoys waited for a report, the Emperor grew anxious, fearing the Great Kingdom would appear foolish over such a trivial matter. Finally, a retired old minister stepped forward, claiming he had a solution.
The Emperor invited the envoys into the grand hall. The old minister, confident and composed, took three straw stalks. He inserted the first into the left ear of the first statue, and it emerged immediately from the right ear. He inserted the second into the second statue, and it fell directly out of its mouth. When he inserted the third into the third statue, the straw disappeared into its belly, producing no sound. The old minister declared: The third golden statue is the most valuable. The envoys fell silent, knowing the answer was correct.
