Long ago, there was a wandering artist who, despite being only in his forties, was skeletal and withered. A doctor diagnosed him with terminal liver cancer. On his deathbed, he summoned his sixteen-year-old son and admonished him: “You must study hard. Do not follow my path of wasting your youth, leading to no achievements in old age. When I was young, I was aggressive and fought constantly. My days and nights were reversed, and I indulged in tobacco and alcohol, contracting a fatal disease at the prime of my life. Remember this deeply and do not repeat my mistakes. I did not receive much education and have no grand theories to teach, but you must pass down this saying: 'If you do not strive when young, you will have no achievements when old.'”
After speaking, he took his last breath. His sixteen-year-old son stood beside him, bewildered and barely comprehending the weight of the words.
As he grew up, his son continued to cause trouble in taverns and casinos. On one occasion, a conflict with a customer escalated, and he inflicted fatal injuries, leading to his arrest and imprisonment. After being released, the world had changed. He realized he could not return to his old ways but, lacking any marketable skills, he could not find legitimate employment. He was forced to return to the countryside, surviving on odd jobs.
Because he failed to understand his father's final words during his youth, he neglected his personal life, not getting married until he was nearly fifty. As he aged, he gradually came to appreciate his father's parting advice, but it was already too late. His physical strength declined year by year. Facing a family he could barely support, his heart was filled with endless remorse and sorrow.
