Equanimity is the Way. Viewing extraordinary matters with an ordinary mind brings everything back to normal. Maintain a peaceful heart: not lured by vanity, not confused by power, not moved by money, not seduced by beauty, and not sunk into superficiality; not rejoicing in external gains nor grieving over personal losses, seeing through fame and status, understanding success and failure, and letting go of praise and blame, one becomes unimpeded at all times and at ease everywhere. Unaffected by honors or insults, one watches flowers bloom and fall before the courtyard; indifferent to coming or going, one gazes at clouds rolling up and down in the sky.
With time, one realizes that all things and all people will eventually become the past; do not hold a grudge against them. Some people are destined to be lost, leaving only regrets behind. It is deeply understood that the most fleeting things in this world are the most beautiful scenery, while the deepest pain belongs to the weathered heart. Slowly, one learns that many things can only be possessed once; slowly, one realizes that two people who are together every day are not necessarily friends, and may share no meaningful connection at all.
Leave a clear sky for the heart. Life is bound to encounter pain unexpectedly. In fact, Pain itself is not terrifying; what is terrifying is betraying one's own inner self and becoming an accomplice to suffering. See things clearly, think them through, pick them up, and let them go. Learn to temper one's temperament, understand the restraint of desires, remain rational when retreating, be magnanimous when yielding, remove distractions, and reduce comparisons. One will then find contentment in the flow of fate. Wanting less makes life much simpler.
