A friend once confessed to me that he had committed a grave mistake.
He said that a few careless words nearly cost him a lifelong friendship.
At that time, most of us came from ordinary families, surviving on a modest monthly allowance from our parents. In my friend's dormitory, however, there was a classmate from a wealthy family. His family's business interests were extensive, even involving investments in several school projects.
In that era, his presence was undoubtedly dazzling.
At the start of the new semester, Apple phones were still rare luxuries. His roommates eagerly competed to experience them, surrounding the wealthy classmate tightly. In that moment, my friend blurted out: "So what? Just because you're rich?"
For an instant, the air seemed to freeze.
Saying nothing, the classmate slammed the door and left.
After that incident, their relationship resembled a calm surface hiding a deep abyss; it was outwardly quiet but turbulent beneath.
Previously, my friend had always assumed the classmate was extravagant and oblivious to the hardships of life.
It was much later that he learned the truth. Despite his affluent background, the classmate did not want to live merely as a shadow of his family's status. That summer vacation, he worked as a private tutor alone for two months, staying away from home. He then used money he had saved earlier to buy himself a gift as a reward for his efforts.
He suddenly recalled that, long before, whenever he woke up, the classmate was often nowhere to be found. When he asked roommates, they simply said he had gone out.
My friend had always mistaken that behavior for the casual confidence of the wealthy.
Upon learning the truth, he deeply resented his own ignorance and prejudice at the time.
As time passed and years went by, they eventually reconciled. However, the friendship that had nearly broken due to his inconsiderate words left a lasting impact.
Often, people become impatient after learning only a partial truth. They mistakenly believe that what they see with their own eyes represents the whole picture, thus rashly judging the beginning and end of events. They completely forget the adage: "One can only see a spot of the leopard through a tube."
