On the night of May 5, 2009, Ma Gedda had a rare moment of uncontrolled weeping.
In the middle of the night, he heard strange noises coming from his child's room, sounding like a mouse gnawing on something. The sounds came in waves, growing increasingly intense. His child usually slept lightly, so why was there no reaction? A sudden thought struck him. He quietly got up, grabbed a flashlight, and tiptoed into the child's room. When he turned on the light, the sight broke his heart: his child was chewing on the bed frame. The child lay sideways, motionless, with one leg dangling in the air and trembling. It was an unbearable pain, a suffering the child refused to let anyone know... Chewing on the bed frame seemed to be the only way for the child to cope.
Ma Gedda stood frozen by the bedside. Upon seeing him, the child quickly adjusted their position to pretend to be asleep, then laughed, saying, 'Dad, I can't sleep, so I'm just playing on my own. Hee hee...'
Ma Gedda said nothing. He turned and ran back to his own room, crouching on the floor and holding his head. He tried to hold back his tears for a long time, but eventually, like an old ox, he broke into loud sobs. His child hobbled over with their injured foot, embracing their father and urging him, 'Dad, it doesn't hurt. It really doesn't...'
The next day, Ma Gedda found the painkillers in the child's room. There were over a hundred pills. It turned out that the child hadn't taken a single one; they were still perfectly packaged and hidden tightly away. Ma Gedda roared, 'Why didn't you take the medicine?' The child coquettishly replied, 'Dad, this medicine costs dozens of yuan! I wanted to sell it to buy you a new piece of clothing. Look at your current clothes, they're beyond repair...'
Felt by both pain and anger, the father forced the child to swallow two pills.
