Beethoven refused to be a favorite in drawing rooms; he preferred to remain in his own quarters, where he could come and go, rise, dress, and eat as he pleased. He enjoyed busying himself with trivial matters in his room, guided solely by his own whims.

He was constantly in dispute with his landlords, leading to frequent moves. One can imagine the reaction of his landlords and other tenants! At times, he moved so frequently that he didn't even bother to set up the piano's legs, simply sitting on the floor to play. Since he had to sign a lease specifying the duration each time he rented a new apartment, he often ended up paying rent for four apartments simultaneously. This is likely why, despite earning a considerable amount of money, he rarely had any savings to show for it.
