Within just eight years, the entire island was overrun by rats. When the scientific team returned to the island, they realized the severity of the situation and immediately sent a telegram to headquarters, requesting the immediate dispatch of several strong cats to control the rat infestation.

The five cats introduced to the island failed to control the rat population; instead, they began to view the sea birds—which had lived without fear and lacked defense mechanisms—as easy prey.
