The Republic of China general Feng Yuxiang came from a poor family and joined the army at the age of two.
At that time, the army usually paid salaries on the 3rd and 5th of the lunar month and conducted target practice on the 5th and 10th. Target practice was an arduous task; regardless of the scorching heat, bitter cold, wind, or rain, soldiers had to lie prostrate on the ground for half a day. Feng Yuxiang's father, Feng Youmao, worried about his son's young age and frail constitution. On practice days, he would always give him a few small coins to buy two sesame cakes to strengthen his body.
Although Yuxiang accepted the money, he was always troubled. Family finances were already tight, and his father had recently fallen from a horse, injuring his right leg and needing proper nutrition to recover. How could he spend it on himself? So, He saved the money given by his father, added a little leftover salary from his own frugality, and accumulated 24 coins. He then bought two jin of pork at the butcher's shop and took it home.
In the evening, when his father returned from work, he noticed fragrant pork stewing in the pot. Surprised, he asked Yuxiang, who was standing by the stove: "Son, where did this meat come from?"
Yuxiang smiled and said, "It wasn't stolen, nor was it robbed. Please eat it with peace of mind!"
However, the upright and honest old man Feng insisted on knowing the truth. Having no choice, Yuxiang finally told him the whole story.
Upon hearing this, Feng Youmao was deeply moved and tears welled up in his eyes.
This incident happened in 1897, when Feng Yuxiang was just fifteen. Twenty years later, he still remembered this event and wrote a humorous doggerel verse specifically about it:
"Bought two jin of fatty meat to take home,
Cooked it with my own hands to serve my father.
Getting meat is not easy in a poor family,
My old father eats it, and I dance with joy."
民国将领冯玉祥出身贫寒，年仅两岁便随军入伍。
当时部队惯例是逢三、五日发饷，逢五、十日打靶。打靶极为辛苦，无论严寒酷暑、刮风下雨，士兵都需趴伏在地半天之久。父亲冯有茂心疼儿子年幼体弱，每逢打靶日，总会给他几枚小钱，让他买两个烧饼以补身体。
然而，玉祥接过钱后心中始终不安。家中生计艰难，且父亲前几日坠马摔伤了右腿，急需营养调养。他怎能独自享用这些钱呢？于是，他将父亲给的钱悉数攒下，加上自己省吃俭用留下的少许饷银，凑齐二十四文钱，到肉铺买了二斤猪肉带回家。
傍晚，父亲收工归来，见锅中炖着香气扑鼻的猪肉，感到十分诧异，便问站在灶前的玉祥：“孩子，这肉是从哪儿来的？”
玉祥笑着回答：“既非偷窃，也非抢夺，您只管放心大胆地吃吧！”
但正直憨厚的冯有茂非要问个究竟。无奈之下，玉祥只好如实相告。
听完儿子的话，冯有茂顿时心酸不已，泪水夺眶而出。
此事发生在1897年，那时冯玉祥刚满十五岁。二十年后，他仍未忘记这段往事，并专门写了一首打油诗记录此事：
“肥肉二斤买回家，手自炖熟奉吾父。家贫得肉良非易，老父食之儿蹈舞。”
