In the vast depths of the Atlantic Ocean lies Marion Island, a remote paradise for sea birds. However, since a British expedition team set foot on this pristine land in 1945, the delicate ecological balance of the island was quickly disrupted, leading to a sharp decline in its natural state.
As the scientific researchers arrived, several rats hiding on the expedition ship managed to slip onto the island. For these rodents, the island was a paradise: food resources were incredibly abundant, and there were no natural predators. Consequently, the rat population exploded like wildfire. Within just eight years, the entire island was overrun by rats. When the scientific team returned to the island, they realized the severity of the situation and immediately sent a telegram to headquarters, requesting the immediate dispatch of several strong cats to control the rat infestation.
However, the subsequent events were completely unexpected. The five cats introduced to the island failed to control the rat population; instead, they began to view the sea birds—which had lived without fear and lacked defense mechanisms—as easy prey. The cats quickly adapted their behavior; they no longer expended energy fighting the strong and aggressive rats but instead greedily hunted the docile sea birds. Over the following years, the descendants of these five “ancestor cats” multiplied to a staggering 2,500 individuals, while the number of sea birds consumed daily reached a shocking 600,000. The once-vibrant “sea bird world” ultimately became a “sea bird graveyard.”
The lesson from this tragedy is that the scientific team failed to recognize the particularity of the contradiction, attempting to solve a unique problem with conventional methods. Normally, cats and birds are not natural enemies; cats and rats are the true adversaries. However, when the environment undergoes specific changes, the nature of the entities involved also changes. It was this specific environmental shift that led to the “career change” of the cats, resulting in an ecological disaster that defied conventional expectations.
